It s called thermore i think and it is quite thin but will give your quilting more definition than just a piece of flannel.
Use the batting called thermore it is a very thin batting that will give a good quilting base but will not add a lot of bulk.
Flannel won t be any sturdier than 100 cotton batting however it will be a lot thinner.
A bonded batting holds up well with use and does not require extensive quilting.
There is a batting out there that is made for quilted wearables and table linens.
For a simple table runner i might use only one or two layers of flannel.

For mug rugs i often use something heavier usually a cotton batting that will better protect table from hot beverages.

Bonded battings usually have a higher loft and airier appearance than needle punched battings.
