Now that i have it i m liking the one inch thickness better as it will be much easier to control the thickness of the build.
Best ceramic blanket for forge lining.
I built 2 forges with ceramic insulating blanket covered by a somewhat thin layer of refractory mortar cement mortar potato patahto the stuff i used ap green s greenpatch 421 is rated for 3200ºf and i put it over the wool which i believe is rated fro 2600º or 2700º.
There are a few choices for the refractory lining i am using itc 100 ht which looks like a cement mortar however it can with stand extremely high heats.
The ceramic blanket and board needs to be stabilized so fibers do not become airborne when the forge is in operation.
I was thinking of a similar method on my next forge that being said in my experience i have found that the coating on the ceramic wool serves to protect the wool from damage and little more other than being able to withstand the heat.
The liner becomes more of a heat sink much like dense firebrick and makes high temps needed for forging forge.
Initially i was looking for 2600f blanket in 2 thinkness but for the price and quantity 50 feet this was not to be passed up.
When applied to fiber blanket and cured itc 100 eliminates this problem.
This is a quality ceramic insulator that will work very well in my homemade forge builds.
Can i cast my liner and skip using ceramic fiber blanket to line my forge.
Imho i think you have a good plan of attack.
The wool is what is doing the insulating and the coating if any thicker than needed is just becoming a heat sink.
Ceramic fiber blankets have proven to be an efficient way of improving the heating capacity of a forge.
Yes you can however a forge with a casted liner is usually very inefficient.
Insulating beyond 3 thick using ceramic fiber blanket isn t really needed.
Ceramafiber ceramic fiber blanket by ceramafiber insulation 8 2300f 1 x 24 x 25 feet for wood stoves pizza ovens kilns forges more 8 pound 2300 degrees 4 8 out of 5 stars 101 98 99 98.
Durabilty itc 100 coats the ceramic fiber blanket forming a protective shell in the forge interior greatly extending the life of the insulation.
For what it s worth my forge floor is a chunk of alumina kiln shelf from a pottery supplier.
